Barn Croft Primary School

Year 1 Curriculum

In Year 1 the children have daily reading in small groups as well as one to one reading with adults and paired reading when they share a book with a friend.
They have a daily phonics groupwork using the Read Write Inc programme of synthetic phonics. The children are grouped by ability and move through the programme at their own pace. They are assessed and regrouped every 6 weeks to ensure they progress quickly in their learning.
English is taught through the Power of Reading with children focusing on a core, quality text. The units combine drama, speaking & listening, art and music as stimuli for writing.
Children are taught maths as part of the Maths Mastery programme. This is a fun, pacy programme which incorporates the use of practical resources and songs to deeply embed the core maths principles – the building blocks and foundations for all future maths learning.
Every year our jigsaws are updated to accomodate the class groups needs, but the topics usually remain the same.
