Barn Croft Primary School

Year 2 Curriculum

In Year 2 the children have a daily Guided Reading groupwork with the teacher guiding the children in summarising, predicting, investigating and questioning the book they are reading. They also have opportunities for reading in small groups as well as one to one reading with adults and paired reading when they share a book with a friend.
Year 2 children have a daily phonics groupwork using the Read Write Inc programme of synthetic phonics. The children are grouped by ability and move through the programme at their own pace. They are assessed and regrouped every 6 weeks to ensure they progress quickly in their learning. Once they have a high level of decoding skills they then move onto learning more about spelling, punctuation and grammar work.
English is taught through the Power of Reading with children focusing on a core, quality text. The units combine drama, speaking & listening, art and music as stimuli for writing.
Maths is taught using practical resources and ensuring that the fundamental principles of Number and Place Value are secure before they move into Year 3.
Every year our jigsaws are updated to accommodate the class groups needs, but the topics usually remain the same.
